Podcast 66 talking to MacCreate David Schloss

Another of my passions is photography and I am lucky to have David Schloss from MacCreate as a guest who is a photographer too. He tells us about his equipment and how he uses it for his sport photos and also his macro photography. We chat about the new SLR cameras that do video as well as stills. Stock photography gets a mention – I do some micro stock with Fotolia and sell some of my images, both illustrations and photos. I would have to put in more effort though to make it pay me much of money but I do get some money out of it from time to time. It all helps

In the interview we also mention HDR photography and some of our favourite photographers. I like the work by Dave Hill – no not the old Slade guitarist and for HDR there is a guy called ‘Stuck in Customs’ on Flickr He has made a tutorial to show how he does it also.

Seeing as I am interested in Video it is great also that the stock sites like fotolia and iStock also sell video clips. I have only uploaded a couple of clips so far of some wind turbines I saw in France. So I will Have to get out and shoot some more.

This week I had to take my mom to the airport at the end of a visit and I decided to drive into Girona to have a look in the Mac shop in the centre of town
I was keen to check out the new magic mouse – I tried it and liked it. The woman in the shop was hovering so I didn’t really play as much as I wanted to but I think I want one. Having the sideways scroll is important for me for the audio editing, and no fear of the ball nipple getting gunked up

Although I have been tempted to get one of those things that the Final cut pro jockeys like to use, a  Contour ShuttleXpress. The ShuttleXpress is a 5 button Jog & Shuttle Multimedia Control Surface. and it says the ShuttleXpress comes pre-configured for many of the leading Audio and Video applications
I wonder if it is set up for AmadeusPro – but I can see myself using it for Final Cut  Express now that I have got around to buying it. That was the other thing I was asking about in the shop – They did not have in stock though – I have bought online now, because parking is such a pain in Girona

Wanted to check if I would be getting a Spanish version or if it was in English. And it seem that it is available in English – good for me anyway. I actually bought what I wanted from the UK Apple site. I would have paid €248 on the Spanish site and I got it for €181 from the UK. The only thing is that I had to have it sent to a UK address. I should have done this before my mother came to visit and not afterwards.

Mac20Q Podcast 65 Ray Ortega

Ray Ortega otherwise known as the Produce Picker or @Podcasthelper, works as a professional podcaster and I we had an excellent chat about podcasting, using the Mac and making video. Ray searches twitter to find people asking questions about how to podcast then helps them become a better podcaster. Good Man Ray !

So naturally we talked about the equipment that we use to make podcasts and it seems he likes the Heil PR40 microphones. he also has a Blue Snowball, great USB mic. When he is making his video podcasts for theMicrobe World Podcast a science technology podcast he gets to use a prosumer Canon video camera and Final Cut Pro for editing the final result.

Ray talked to me about the process that he goes through to make the podcasts for Produce Picker Podcast, telling me about the early episodes being a bit horrible compared to the quality of the content that he produces now. But that is the great thing about podcasting, you can get started with no experience and cheap amateur equipment and move to greater heights when you get further into  podcasting and you know you have gone past the Pod Fade stage of the game.

I asked Ray about the niche he has with produce, as in fruit and veg. and he says that he took the advice, he would give to anyone starting a podcast from new and that is to talk about something that you know about. So seeing as he had been working in that realm for many years while he was a student, it was natural to make a podcast about Fruit and vegetables and how to choose the best from the supermarket or market fruit seller.

At the end of the podcast I asked Ray about the statement that Leo Laporte had made recently which stunned a bemused podcasting world. You would think that Leo Laporte knows what he is talking about seeing as he is doubling his podcasting  income each year, but I don’t agree with him one bit. Listening to podcasts is not hard, you can turn up at a web site and just listen, without any extra equipment. You can easily download a podcast through iTunes or other podcatcher and have the downloaded files ready for your listening pleasure on your computer or even if you feel like it have them transferred automatically to your mp3 player. it doesn’t have to be an iPod either.

It really is not rocket science and all it will take is for the traditional media to promote it in the same way as Twitter is getting mentioned on main stream TV programmes. Podcasting is in its infancy and will evolve more to be hugely popular and not something that has to be explained as it is now, due to it’s newness. The BBC puts out many of its programmes as podcasts and in the U.S the media giants are jumping on the boat to join in with an exciting media that is about to explode.

Obviously Ray and I are biased towards podcasting and there is a possibility that Leo is making statements like that to get his name talked about even more than it already is. Other podcasters have commented on this also. I suspect that podcasting will change as it gets more popular and more of it will be streamed to computers and smart phones, rather than be downloaded. The general public are more and more getting the idea with podcasts and having media available for when they want to watch or listen to it, instead of being hog tied by traditional TV programming.

If you heard the rubbish that leo was talking and would like to comment on it or comment on what I have put in this blog post then please leave a comment. Or you might send  me an email to mac20q at gmail dott com. Looking forward to getting your thought on the matter.

Mac20Q Podcast 63 Peter Wobster & Krystal Gault

Krystal and Peter are film makers in the North West of England and they also run Cinematopia a small film festival. Here is what they say about Cinematopia.

They organise CINEMATOPIA which is Preston’s only regular MOVIE NIGHT hosted by the Mad Ferret and Kitsch Monkey Productions Krystal is the Kitsch Monkey.

They Screen a weird and wonderful, themed programme of short film, music video, animation and digital media and topped off with a cult feature film, this is surely the most relaxing way to enjoy a beer or two – and it’s FREE! Be scintillated! Be dazzled! Be amazed!
That’s is what you get for having your movie nights in a pub, the films are the free bit and the beer you probably have to pay for.

Seems that is it a great idea to be making films and showing films too. Keep the interest up for film in general and it has to be good for meeting other people interested in film and movies.

Peter is the tech guy of the team and uses Final Cut Pro to edit their movies. He teaches film and sound design to bring in extra cash, for making their movies. It is getting difficult for all film makers to get financing for making movies. I even saw a report that stated that Hollywood will be making a third less movies

Video20Q Podcast 6 LivingProofFilm

LivingProofFilm

Always good to talk to the next generation of filmmaker, musician, writer, artist and see some good things on the horizon. Very pleased to get talking a a guy with bucket loads of enthusiasm for making statement in film and video. Dale O’Keefee is just out of University and is keen to get using his talents with LivingProofFilms.

He got himself a camera with the student loan and he reckons it has given him more fun than the alternative for the student funds i.e. parties and drinking. Sorry students, I am just kidding, honest. He prefers the Canon cameras and would like to move up to a HD camera when funds permit.

Dale likes to work with a loose script and just get out there and film things. he says it seems to work for him. Due to being a only just released into the wild ex student and therefore skint. Ah the joys of student loans, and the having to pay the money back. Dale uses Celtx the software for screenwriting that is free and very capable too. I have tried it out myself, why pay for Final Draft when Celtx does it all.

GotoMeeting  Hold your meetings online for just $49/mo. Try GoToMeeting FREE for 30 days.

Dale talks to me about how he sees his fledgling film production business going and we talk the usual mix hardware, software and creativity with a dash of how he will try to make a name for himself and some money on the back of that.

He uses family members to act in his movies and has to keep the costs of the filming to a bare minimum. We all have to start somewhere and as many film makers have told me the important thing is to have a good story and the content will be found by the public that are there to be entertained and amused by us creative types. You can catch some of Dales work on YouTube and definitely have a look at the ones where he has his dad acting for him.

In the ramble part of the podcast I talk about the Power to the Pixel conference that was taking place in London today and had some very interesting speakers. I watched three of the talks and the talk by BRIAN NEWMAN, Consultant and Former President, Tribeca Film Institute was –

HOW TO BE ‘BETTER THAN FREE’
The Internet is a super-distribution machine that allows copies of digital media to flow in an almost frictionless way. As the wealth and survival of traditional media businesses are built on selling precious copies, the free flow of free copies is undermining the established order. If reproductions of media are free, how can we keep on financing films and how can we find value in the media we create and sell?

He had some good examples of how some people have made money by giving away content for free. The idea of Connecting with your Audience – and then giving them a Reason to Buy, I thought was an excellent way to think about how to move forward in the age of digital content.

GreenScreen - Chromakey with iMovie

Weekend looking after kids – and GreenScreen iMovie

There was a national holiday here in Spain and my sister in law left her kids with us for the weekend and the youngest is into everything, every moment he is awake. Non stop el teremoto, the earthquake. Nice boys though. But I am pleased my kids are all grown up and doing their own thing.

Enough if the personal news and on to the Mac, even though I wasn’t able to use mine as much this weekend. I just put together a video showing how to use the green screen feature in iMovie. The first time I did it I couldn’t believe it was so easy! This time I recorded what I did with ScreenFlow version 2 which is still working great even though it is beta and not due out until any day now.  Using iMovie to to the chromakey is just a case of dragging the video with the green screen in it into the timeline on top of the background you want to replace the green with. If the screen is lit properly and without shadow caused by creases, it won’t even need any adjustments. I had to make a couple of adjustments but after that it was perfect.

Watch the video at Youtube

I do plan to get a longer pole for the green material and to put the iron over it too. I will stretch it over some extra poles perhaps to get it just right. You can put a moving background behind or a still image if you wish.

I am still toying with the idea of getting Final Cut Express, which would be better than iMovie but I am finding that iMovie is quite capable now that it has gone to version 09.

Mac20Q Podcast 60 featuring Steve Sheridan

A burger is fine food ???

I was looking to get to talk with Steve for quite a while. I had heard he would be an interesting fella to talk to and it was true. We had a great chat about about how he uses his Mac. It was also known to me that Steve is well into the video end of things, so I asked him about that. he undertook a project which took him nearly forever to digitise a pile of videos from the old days. He liked doing it so much he even did some for his sister.

GotoMeeting  Hold your meetings online for just $49/mo. Try GoToMeeting FREE for 30 days.

Steve provides the back up and support for Alison, both moral and technical for the Nosillacast. Moderating the room when Allison does the live recording of her podcast. I think that Steve deserves some of the lime light too. He claimed to be shy but was an excellent guest and in the end we had to stop or the podcast would just be too long to put out.

In the ramble I talk a bit about the screencasting I have been doing this week. I enjoy doing it but this week I have had extra impetus with having the new version of ScreenFlow to test out. I got in on the Version 2 beta testing run and it has to be coming out soon because I have not had any problems with it while making the screencasts.

I also comment in the podcast about Macbreak Weekly, following on from the condemnation of Leo Laporte by Allison made me re think how I felt about MBW. OK they could be annoying from time to time with the singing now and then on the show but lately I had to wonder about why they keep the show length when there is so little news sometime. They end up talking more about the competing products from competing businesses, making it less of a Mac Podcast and more of a general geek show.

Ah well it is their show and they can do what they like with it, as I do what I like with my show. Maybe my listeners will tell me what I could do with changing in the show here at Mac20Q, and I don’t expect to get the call now to go and talk on the MacBreak Weekly now. Ah well never mind…

Microsoft’s grinning robots or the Brotherhood of the Mac.

Microsoft’s grinning robots or the Brotherhood of the Mac. Which is worse?

Funny Article….

Microsoft’s grinning robots or the Brotherhood of the Mac. Which is worse?

I admit it: I’m a bigot. A hopeless bigot at that: I know my particular prejudice is absurd, but I just can’t control it. It’s Apple. I don’t like Apple products. And the better-designed and more ubiquitous they become, the more I dislike them. I blame the customers. Awful people. Awful. Stop showing me your iPhone. Stop stroking your Macbook. Stop telling me to get one.

Leo Laporte is labelled a hypocrite

Leo Laporte gets a right lashing !

Allison Sheridan of the Nosilla cast certainly didn’t mince here words in the latest Nosillacast, in which she gave Leo Laporte a verbal lashing for his hypocrisy over the Snow Leopard. She played a couple of clips from the Leo Laporte Twit show in which he said totally contradicting things. In the first one he was talking about how the $29 upgrade for Snow Leopard was a great deal and despite there not being many in your face improvements, the under the hood improvements made it a no brainer good value deal to get Snow Leopard.

Leo Laporte

In the next clip he was heard lambasting Apple for the very same thing. I suppose he just changed his mind or he forgot what he said before. Maybe when you are making 1.5 million a year from podcasting maybe it affects the memory a little. When you look at him in the picture to the left, you would think that butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. Not  such a good guy after all, did you hear the one where he had a spat with a guest on his show and kicked him off with a few expletives thrown in for good measure. I saw the video of that one and he looked like he was in a bad mood to start with. Maybe he was having a bad tech day.

What do you think of Leo Laporte?

Podcasts I listen to at Mac20Q

Podcasts I listen to include Buzz out Loud. I listen because it is a tech podcast that covers not just Apple and sometimes there are Mac haters on there. Always good to hear what the opposition are saying, no point in living in a walled garden and not able to see outside. They do also have Mac users on there too. They have a fun style of presentation and for that it is great to listen to whatever they are saying.
It does come out nearly daily and sometimes I might miss one because I have not the time to keep up with all of them. Interesting podcast though, and one I recommend.

Seemed to have been desreved reall seeing as the Leo was at one point singing the praises of Apple and Snow Leopard then just a short while later he was slagging them off for the same thing he was just praising them for.
I suppose it is possible or reasonable for a guy to change his mind, although I am not sue that he said he had come to a different opinion, but had just pretended that he had not made the first lot of comments and imagined that no one would notice. Well Allison certainly did and I think there will be some red faces at the Laporte ranch if word gets to him about his hypocrisy.

One of the good things about the Nosilla cast and there a few good things to love on her show is her chit chat across the pond. Allison has the tame Belgian/Irish fella that gives her all the tech speak in a really understandable format. Allison plays the dummy and Bart Buschotts does the peoples propellor head guy. Often they are like an old married couple the way they interact. It is a wonder Steve Sheridan doesn't get jealous. Mind you is across a very large pond, so no worries there.

I am always listening to the podcast when I am walking the dog on a Monday or Tuesday morning and it brightens up the start of my day. I often find myself having a bit of a giggle. This is despite the fact that the Nosillacast is always informative.

Allison does a live presentation while she is recording her podcast and there is no way I could do that, I fluff my words far too often and I need some editing time, People gather in a chat room to cheer her on as she is caught on camera doing her stuff with the podcast. Click on the picture above to get to the latest podcast where Leo gets a lashing.

Checking out Mac Info sites

Checking out Mac Info sites

There are a lot of web sites which have the Apple Mac as the focus of their attention and the one I am telling you about today is very useful looking. It is called Switching to Mac. It has tutorials, reviews, news tips and also has a forum.
The tutorials show you how to find the serial number on your Mac, how to use templates in Pages, how to set alarms and timers, how to create PDF’s from any document on your Mac. In short there are a good few items useful for switchers to the Mac.

Podcast 60 Mac20Q Keith Alperin

In this episode I have the developer of the excellent Mercury mover and HighBrow applications Keith Alperin he is also working on an iPhone application too for the shoppers amongst us. I can’t stand shopping unless it is guerilla shopping. Know what I want, where to get it, how much it will cost. In the shop and out again with only the checkout slowing me down. Better still is I can order online. Keith is an extremely genuine chap and I had an absolute blast chatting with him. I asked him for a copy of Mercury Mover and a copy of HighBrow to give away on the show and he responded have 2 copies of each What a nice man

GotoMeeting  Hold your meetings online for just $49/mo. Try GoToMeeting FREE for 30 days.

The question you have to answer to win the Mercury Mover application is in to podcast. The question is simplicity itself and the answer is easy peasy. All you have to do is download a copy of the software , there is a trial version available. The answer will be revealed to you. MercuryMover reduces the friction you feel when you use your Mac. With MercuryMover, you can move and resize windows on your Mac from the keyboard, positioning them precisely where you want. By shunning the slow and imprecise mouse, MercuryMover empowers you to work faster and play more.

The first person with the correct answer for the Mercury Mover application will get the software straight away. The second copy of the software will be available in a draw of all the other correct answers.  Same process for the HighBrow also from Heliumfoot software. Two very useful pieces of software for you, the listeners of Mac 20 Questions to win.

Highbrow enables anyone to utilize each installed web browser more effectively on your Mac by eliminating the annoyances that arise from using multiple web browsers. With Highbrow, you can select any of three separate behaviors:

  • You can easily switch the system-wide web browser via the Highbrow menu in your Mac’s menubar.
  • Highbrow can change the browser on the fly as you shift between web browsers.
  • Highbrow can ask you which browser to use each time you click a link via an unintrusive heads-up display.

ScreenFlow 2 Coming soon

I am really pleased to report that ScreenFlow 2 is coming out soon and even better than that I have got myself onthe beta testing program for ScreenFlow so I get to try it out before the release date.

So over the next while I will be making a pile of screencast to test out the new things in the software. There are transitions going to be available, and I am looking forward to trying those out for sure.

Here is a list of other new features

Here’s a brief summary of some new things you will be able to do in version 2.0:

  • Easily slow down or speed up clips
  • Add elegant new 2D and 3D transitions such as page-curl, ripple, flash, swipe, cross-dissolve, dip to black or white, and more
  • Store your media directly in your ScreenFlow document
  • Drag your media directly to the canvas
  • Use a hot key to pause
  • Use new keyboard shortcuts including clip nudging and zoom in/out.
  • Export directly to YouTube

Mac20Q Podcast 59 Giles Thurston

Had a great chat with Giles, he is an IT professional and is fairly new to the Mac. I was able to pass on a tip to him during the interview regards using the trackpad on his MacBook. He is into content management systems with his work and will recommend Expression Engine as a good CMS. My knowledge of CMS’s stops at Joomla and I am quite happy to stay with Wordpress for my content. I am tempted though to try out Expression Engine although I think I prefer the openness of the Wordpress platform.

I am testing out Transmit the ftp application and it worked well enough for me today to upload the podcast to the server. I would like to look into what I could do with it in terms of the Automator that is built into the system.

What I want to do is to have a .mov file split into two tracks converted by an application that will do that job. Then those two .mov file to be converted to AIFF format for me. Possibly for them both to be opened up next to each other in AmadeusPro. Possibly have the resulting file saved as an AIFF that can then be sent to Levelator. It will be then ready for me to edit before I make it into a podcast.
It could be quite nice too, to have the podcast converted to an .mp3 and uploaded to the server ready to be distributed. I am not being lazy, honest – just looking to streamline my podcasting work flow.

You will enjoy the interview with Giles, an extremely nice guy who has a five month old son. He will have to work out how to protect his computers from sticky fingers soon enough. Good luck Giles.

I am thinking about making a documentary about tattoos and tattooed people. I have no tattoos myself but I do like to see good examples of the art form. I also cringe when I see some horrors permanently etched on skin. I think there are a few stories to tell about the art, the people and the process. So if you have one, please contact me with the contact form below and lets talk.
